Bloomington, Ind. — A pair of former Hoosiers will take center stage in October as the 2024 MLB Postseason gets underway. Veteran designated hitter Kyle Schwarber (2012-14) will play in his fifth-consecutive playoff series while left-handed reliever Tim Herrin (2016-18) makes his postseason debut.
Over the past five seasons, Schwarber has appeared in the playoffs with the Cubs (2020), the Red Sox (2021) and the Phillies (2022-24). He is the owner of 20 career postseason home runs and has one World Series ring to his name, winning the Fall Classic with Chicago in 2016. He hit three home runs in the 2022 World Series, but Philadelphia fell to Houston in six games.
With one of the top two records in the National League, the Phillies will have a bye directly into the NLDS. Schwarber and company will begin their postseason journey against the winner of a best-of-three Wild Card series.
In the American League, Herrin is set to make his postseason debut with the Guardians. Cleveland wrapped up the AL Central title and one of the best two records in the league, securing a bye into the division series. The Guardians will take on the winner of a Wild Card series between the Astros and Tigers.
The Terre Haute, Ind. native is enjoying a phenomenal breakout campaign. The southpaw made a case to be an All-Star, pitching to a 1.92 earned run average across 75 appearances and 65.2 innings pitched this year. He owns a strikeout tally of 68 this season and has allowed just 17 runs (14 earned) in a dominant Cleveland bullpen.
The MLB Postseason gets underway on Tuesday, Oct. 1. The four Wild Card series will run from Oct. 1-3 before the divisional rounds get going on Saturday (Oct. 5). There has been an IU alum appear in each of the last two Fall Classics with Schwarber in 2022 (Phillies) and left-handed pitcher Andrew Saalfrank in 2023 (Diamondbacks).
